Keto for Fur-babies?
Humans are thriving with a fat-fueled lifestyle, so should we share our healthy fats with our canine BFFs?
Curl up with your fur-babe and keep on reading as I drop some fatty knowledge.
You have heard me shout from the rooftops that keto can cure some cancers. Carbohydrates, sugar, and excess protein fuel cancer cell growth by providing these damaged cells with the ONLY substance they can consume: glucose. When we eliminate dietary glucose through a low-carb, high-fat, moderate-protein ketogenic lifestyle and intermittent fasting, we deprive cancer cells of their food, forcing them to shrink and die. (Take THAT, cancer!)
Did you know that cancer is the #1 killer of dogs?
According to KetoPet, "about 6 million dogs in the US will be diagnosed with a naturally occurring form of cancer." I have personally experienced the loss of a pet due to cancer, and as any fur-parent knows, the loss was devastating. Fortunately, KetoPet is conducting research on cancer-stricken rescue dogs to treat, prevent, and cure the disease using a ketogenic lifestyle.
Before you get all weird about the idea of "experimenting on animals", understand that this is NOT that. KetoPet rescued these awesome pets from being euthanized at high-kill shelters, and provides them with the best possible care.
At the KetoPet Sanctuary in Austin, TX the cancer-stricken dogs are placed on a ketogenic diet consisting of 80-90% fat (from sources such as coconut, olive, and MCT oils), 5-15% beef protein, and 5% protein from vegetables. They receive top-notch oncology care, weekly blood work, a custom exercise program, and additional treatments such as hyperbaric oxygen therapy as needed. Ketogenic nutrition, however, remains at the forefront of the treatment protocol.
KetoPet does not yet claim that keto cures cancer in dogs, however, since it was founded in 2014, more than 50% of all patients are still living, and some are now cancer-free. While an exact treatment protocol is not yet available to the public, if you would like to calculate your dog's macronutrient goals, KetoPet offers an easy-to-use calculator on their website.
