How the Ketogenic Diet Can Help Cancer Patients
Chronic diseases are common in today's society, despite tremendous advances in health care. If our health care has improved greatly, along with technological advancements, why are diseases still so prevalent? It is becoming more widely accepted that the solution for treating disease lies within our bodies and, just as it has been for centuries, food can be used as medicine.
Rather than a man-made pill, we should be trying to regulate the metabolic functions within our bodies in order to treat disease. Research has shown that sugar is the only source of fuel for cancer cells, and sugar also contributes to an inflammatory environment. So then what's the solution? Uh, that would be keto!
1. Keto Starves Cancer
Sugar essentially increases the risk for cancer and disease. Basically, cancer flourishes by using energy from glucose fermentation. A vast majority of glucose comes from carbs.
The keto diet significantly lowers carb intake, which in turn reduces blood glucose levels. By reducing your carb intake you will starve cancer cells of their energy supply.
One of the main reasons keto is so effective against cancer cells is because of their unique insulin receptors. You see, cancer cells have ten times more insulin receptors on their cellular surface. This allow cancer cells to fill themselves with glucose and nutrients coming from the bloodstream at a very high rate.
If you continue to use glucose as your primary energy source, cancer cells will continue to thrive and spread. Keto may help kill cancer because the main energy source on the keto diet is not glucose, it's fat. Cancer cells cannot metabolize fatty acids for energy, so by restricting glucose, you can essentially starve the cancer cells.
2. Cancer Prevention With Keto
When you combine the keto diet with intermittent fasting, it becomes extremely effective. Mainly because fasting increases ketone production, and induces autophagy (cellular cleansing; literally the good cells eat the bad ones). Late-stage cancer patients can further weaken their cancer cells by completing a lemon water cleanse for three to seven days.
A regular intermittent fasting lifestyle, combined with the ketogenic diet, will encourage your healthy cells to kill off cancer cells while depriving the cancer cells of their only source of fuel. Experiment a little to find which type of intermittent fasting is right for you. For example, a 20-hour fast may involve eating food between 3pm and 7pm each day.
3. Keto Meal Plan for Fighting Cancer
It's important to keep in mind that diets high in protein are also capable of feeding cancer. A moderate protein intake is recommended on the ketogenic diet, and the higher-quality the protein, the better. Your diet should emphasize healthy fats, high-quality fatty proteins, and low carbohydrate vegetables.
- Healthy Fats: Avocados, coconut oil, grass-fed butter or ghee, raw seeds and nuts, olive oil, and eggs.
- Low Carbohydrate Vegetables: Cauliflower, cabbage, celery, broccoli, collard greens, Brussels sprouts, and spinach.
- Protein: Grass-fed beef, poultry, fish, eggs.
While these are only a few food options for the keto diet, you should definitely focus on those three food groups.
The Ketogenic Diet and Cancer Takeaway
All in all, the ketogenic diet is effective when it comes to fighting cancer, as it starves it of it's primary energy source. By reducing inflammation, the keto diet can also help prevent diseases and promote overall health.
